Obesity and malnutrition are problems that are happening all over the world. Even in our country, these problems persist. This is something that every parent should take seriously especially when obesity has been linked to many lifestyle diseases like diabetes, strokes, and heart attacks among others.

Here at Children's Clinic La Jolla, our pediatricians, Dr. S. Daman Paul and Dr. Gretchen Gainor, take childhood nutrition seriously. If you’re having issues with your child’s eating habits, you can visit our San Diego-area office to discuss your concerns. With this in mind, let’s tackle some of the FAQs in childhood nutrition.

What Should I Do When My Child is Overweight?

If your child is obese or overweight, it is important to consult your pediatrician to know your child’s ideal height-to-weight ratio. This will make it clear just how much weight needs to be lost. During a consultation with your pediatrician at our San Diego-area office, you’ll also learn proper nutrition guidelines.

This ensures that your child will be placed on a balanced diet and receive the right amount of nutrients.

What Should My Child Drink?

Just stick to plain water. There is no specific amount recommended for children, but, it would be wise to let them drink as much water as possible throughout the day, especially if they are physically active and even if they don’t feel thirsty. Additionally, more water is needed when the weather is hot or if your child is sick. In case the taste of water doesn’t suit your child well, you can always add lime or lemon as a flavoring. Vegetables and fruits can also provide water to the human body.

Is Physical Activity Part of Good Nutrition in Children?

For children, physical activity is essential. However, being physically active does not necessarily translate to being involved in sports. It can take the form of playing outside or simply moving around regularly, as opposed to just sitting down in front of the television or the computer. Active children are more likely to carry these healthy activities through their adolescence and adulthood. They are likewise more aware of the value of good nutrition.
